SMEs 'should focus on upskilling'
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – such as freelance consultants and contractors - should focus on upskilling to emerge stronger from the recession, it has been suggested.

Operations paying more than one worker should consider moving people between departments to utilise their expertise rather than making them redundant, Business Link stated. An advisor from the Government body Matthew Perkins remarked: "You don't need to look at it on a long-term basis, because some businesses are projected to come out of the recession by early 2010."

He also underlined the importance of retaining workers in order to take advantage of their knowledge of the firm.

Mr Perkins was commenting following a recent report by the Confederation of British Industry, that stated business levels are below normal in the sector.

However, rises in activity during the first quarter of 2009 were noted in companies involved in accountancy, legal services and marketing.

Consumer services, meanwhile, saw a slowdown in money generation and employment stabilise.
